Human Exposure Assessment

Aim of the course

To gain knowledge and understanding of exposure as an integral and necessary component in the sequence of events leading to potential health consequences.

The course will primarily support the needs of PhD candidates with a research in toxicology (and ambition to become ERT). The course will also address other audiences such as professionals in both occupational and environmental fields. This course will also be open to persons with academic background who are not pursuing an ERT (but have sufficient background in toxicology or are motivated to obtain that).

This course provides a general background in the methodology of exposure assessment in the context of human health risk assessment and will place exposure assessment in the context of the much wider field of internal and external exposomics.

In addition to the basics (listed below) some applications of exposure assessment will be demonstrated using case topics from different fields such as environmental health, occupational health and consumer safety. Hands-on training will be provided for a selected number of applications. View here to see the exact content, lectures and speakers of the upcoming course.

List of subjects:

  • Scenarios, determinants and routes of exposure
  • Exposomics
  • Strategies and design for exposure studies
  • Measuring external and internal (biomonitoring) human exposures
  • Quality assurance in exposure studies
  • Statistical methods to analyse exposure measurement data
  • Deterministic vs. probabilistic modelling approaches
  • Modelling of exposure and dose/ Toxicokinetics and PBK modelling
  • Aggregate and cumulative exposures to chemical substances
  • Assessing exposures with biological markers
  • Understand the basic principles of exposure assessment, including how exposure routes impact on toxicokinetics and internal dose
  • Understand the strengths and limitations of exposure measurements and modelling in human health risk assessment
  • Be able to statistically analyse and interpret the data from exposure measurements and exposure modelling in risk assessment
  • Be able to apply exposure assessment in multiple contexts
